The year 2025 marked a significant leap in gas-fired power generation across the globe, rising to an alarming 31 percent. The United States alone holds responsibility for nearly a quarter of this augmentation, surpassing China in the process to represent the largest national increase. The motivating force behind this rise? The desire to power our ever-expanding data hubs, with more than a third of the US’s gas power plant development being utilized specifically for this purpose. This fact was recently highlighted in an analysis by the nonprofit Global Energy Monitor (GEM).

Ironically, amidst our growing desire for ethereal, cloud-based storage and artificial intelligence, we must keep one foot firmly planted in the physical world. Like a mythical beast from an ancient fable, our digital future continues to be fueled by the burning furnace of fossil fuels. Energy demands aren’t decreasing in this digital era; in fact, they’re continuously rising. The increased production and usage of gas-fired power plants reflects this dramatic shift in energy consumption and spotlights the challenges inherent in managing our digital footprint.

Technological advancements and digital innovation are fundamental aspects of our modern society, crucial to improving our livelihoods and spurring economic growth. However, amidst this vast landscape of digitalization, we mustn’t lose sight of the fact that the pivotal supporting role is played out in the physical realm, through the deployment of flat, gray structures powering our digital dreams.

Ursprünglicher Artikel: The Verge

It may come as a surprise, but the expansive world of data digitalization is far from airy.
