Cloudflare Outage Disrupts X, ChatGPT, and Downdetector

Today, many major online services experienced disruptions due to a significant outage on Cloudflare, a premier networking company responsible for offering DDoS protection and content delivery services for numerous businesses worldwide. This affected the accessibility of multiple popular sites, including X and ChatGPT, with error messages indicating, “Please unblock challenges.cloudflare.com to proceed.” Even DownDetector, a website that generally tracks internet outages, wasn’t spared from this hiccup.

The disruption began at approximately 6:20 AM ET and was attributed to a configuration file that handled threat traffic. According to Cloudflare spokesperson Jackie Dutton, this file unexpectedly outgrew the anticipated number of entries, causing the software system that handles Cloudflare’s services traffic to crash. There is, however, no evidence suggesting this was due to any attack or malicious activity in the system.

Fans of Cloudflare will be pleased to know that its technical team was quick on its toes to address the issue. By 9:42AM ET, the company had posted an update on its status page, reassuring its users that it had implemented a fix for the disruption. Further, the team confirmed the situation had been resolved and that they are continuously monitoring for errors to make sure all services return to normalcy.

The incident was significant enough to draw a comment from Cloudflare’s CTO, Dane Knecht. Knecht openly acknowledged the service had “failed” its customers and the broader internet. The root of this mishap, he explained, was a latent bug in a service that supported the company’s bot mitigation ability. This bug caused a system crash subsequent to a routine configuration change. Importely, Knecht addressed concerns about the integrity of the system by emphasizing that the crash was not due to any type of attack.

As it goes with the sprawling web of internet services, this unfortunate hiccup also affected other online platforms, causing service issues on Indeed, Grindr, Uber, Canva, Spotify, and NJ Transit. Even high-traffic digital outlets including Axios, The Information, and Politico were inconveniently pulled down. Video game aficionados might have had their sessions interrupted as even League of Legends and Archive of Our Own were affected.

Cloudflare’s outage adds to the list of similar incidents that have recently ruffled the internet. Less than a month ago, Amazon Web Services experienced a massive crash, taking down several services, including Fortnite, Alexa, and Snapchat. This was shortly trailed by an issue at Microsoft Azure which led to a few hours of Xbox offline.

Cloudflare has since updated its customers with more information about the recent outage.
