In a fast-paced digital era where capturing attention is increasingly challenging, Google is innovating by offering a fresh way to digest note summaries. Through its NotebookLM platform, Google is introducing a novel feature – short, engaging artificial intelligence (AI) driven videos, reminiscent of the viral TikTok-style clips.

Through the utilization of advanced AI technologies, Google’s NotebookLM platform lets users transform their notes into sixty-second vertical clips. The idea is to provide a new way for subscribers of Google AI Ultra and Pro to engage with their text by converting it into dynamic, bite-sized videos. The primary inputs for these videos are the sources users upload into the app, reinforcing a highly personalized and relevant learning experience.

This new NotebookLM feature comes to life with a captivating example shared by Google showing how to make a history lesson interesting. It revives the account of Australia’s unsuccessful war against Emus, narrated with paper cutout-style AI art of emus. This format not only brings fresh life to dry notes but inherently adds a visual appeal, enhancing learning and retention.

Google’s NotebookLM isn’t new to building interactive learning experiences. Its tradition of experimenting with diverse formats is consistent. The platform lets you interact with your research in multiple engaging ways. Apart from generating sixty-second AI videos, NotebookLM offers AI podcasts, cinematic videos, and visual explainers for the same set of inputs. Therefore, each user can choose their preferred method of engagement with the contents of the app based on their individual learning style and preference.

By transforming the act of note-taking and summary reading into a visually appealing and interactive short video, Google is adding another feather to its cap of innovative offerings. Let the experience of doom scrolling be not merely time spent mindlessly scrolling through feeds, but rather a moment of picking up a quick, engaging educational nugget.

In a surprising turn of events, Amazon MGM has decided not to move forward with Artificial, a film by Luca Guadagnino about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. In what comes as a disappointment to many, the film, set to star Andrew Garfield, has been in progress for nearly a year. A rollercoaster story of Altman’s tumultuous five days in 2023, where he was abruptly dismissed and then reinstated as CEO, is not to hit the screens under Amazon’s cine-banner.

Garfield, known for his captivating performances, was set to portray Sam Altman, bringing into focus the intricacies of his challenges and triumphs. The cast was also adorned by Monica Barbaro, an actress from A Complete Unknown, who was cast as OpenAI’s CTO Mira Murati and the versatile Ike Barinholtz, taking on the role of tech mogul Elon Musk. Anora star Yura Borisov was due to depict the mind of OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever.

This component of the plot, coupled with the caliber of the attached cast, promised an engrossing story to viewers about the tech world’s cut-throat reality and the intense dynamics within OpenAI. However, in an unexpected move, Amazon MGM deemed the production better suited under a different studio umbrella.

In a statement provided to Deadline, the film studio subtly suggested the separation. Amazon MGM seemed to exhibit genuine concern for the movie’s deserving platform by saying that the film “will be better served if it were released by a different studio”. At the same time, they assured cooperation with the filmmaker while making the transition smooth.

The decision to drop Artificial raises questions about the future of the film. Will another studio pick it up, or will it become a shelved project? Only time will tell. However, one thing is for sure – the excitement surrounding the film’s premise, the selected cast, and the controversial story of Sam Altman will maintain the buzz and eagerness among viewers worldwide.

There’s a wave of excitement running through the tech world – and it’s all thanks to Google’s latest revamp of its virtual assistant, Gemini. The tech giant has made it possible for this multifaceted chatbot to generate interactive 3D models and simulations, adding an entirely new dimension to our information-seeking (or idle curiosity-satisfying) endeavours.

So, how does all of this work, you may wonder. With the newly introduced feature of Gemini, you can directly interact with AI-generated models. Yes, it’s just as futuristic as it sounds. Today, you can nudge Gemini to build a 3D iteration of the Earth’s structure, tomorrow you might want to play around with its rendition of a supermassive black hole – the possibilities are quite literally, mind-bogglingly endless!

With Gemini’s 3D models, you get access to a range of interaction options. For example, you could rotate the model around to view it from different angles. It’s like holding the Earth in your hands, except easier and, well, less science fiction. Then there are sliders you could fiddle with to customise the model according to your liking or needs. You can also input different values to alter the simulation in real-time. It’s almost like dipping your toes into a world of augmented reality and coming out with a wealth of knowledge in tow.

I couldn’t resist the temptation to test Gemini’s innovative feature myself. So, I asked the chatbot to whip up a simulation of the Moon orbiting the Earth. The result was an intricate 3D model complete with a few exciting ways to interact with it. There was a slider to control the speed of the Moon’s orbit, a toggle button to put away the line signifying its orbital path, and a nifty pause button, just in case you wanted to catch a breather from the all too realistic simulation.

Google’s Gemini is yet another example of how technology is constantly making strides towards a future where complexities are simplified, and knowledge is made more accessible – one 3D model at a time.

Nvidia’s DLSS 5 Upscaling Tech: A Breakthrough or a Letdown?

In the validation of our digital age, the race to produce ever more realistic graphics and effects is a relentless one. Enter Nvidia, a giant in the world of technology, who recently unveiled a new product in their line of graphics innovations. Yesterday marked the release of Nvidia’s latest upscaling technology, DLSS 5. And far from being offered as just another tool in their graphics arsenal, Nvidia outlined it as “the company’s most significant breakthrough in computer graphics since the debut of real-time ray tracing in 2018”.

The intention was that the tech would “infuse pixels with photoreal lighting and materials”. If only it were that simple – Unfortunately, the reality seems to have fallen somewhat short of the mark, causing a stir amongst the gaming community. Upon its unveiling, DLSS 5 seemed to reveal some unintended side effects, which many users equated to AI slop. The tech’s impact can be seen across several games/gallery instances, from the lead character of Resident Evil Requiem, Grace, to the young wizards-in-trainings of Hogwarts Legacy.

Of Instagram Filters and AI Botched Makeovers

DLSS 5 appears to have given Grace a distinctly unsettling makeover, akin more to AI art than realistic gaming graphics, and has certainly left users bewildered. When it comes to Hogwarts Legacy, the characters seem to have been wrung through an Instagram filter, mangling their faces and distorting their appearances.

Is Nvidia’s new DLSS 5 an unprecedented step forward in the search for ultra-realistic graphics, or an unfortunate misstep? The jury is still out. As with the release of any new technology, skeptics are quick to criticize, but time has a way of balancing the scales. Nvidia will likely respond to these criticisms by refining their technology to address any flaws and user concerns.

While the unveil might not have gone exactly as planned, it’s still an interesting chapter in the ever-developing world of AI graphics. Let’s see how this ongoing story evolves and what Nvidia has in store for gamers and graphics aficionados alike in improving their DLSS technology.

Nvidia, the tech giant embraced by gamers and creatives alike, recently made a significant announcement during its GTC conference that has garnered equal amounts of enthusiasm and criticism. The company introduced its newest venture, DLSS 5, and it’s safe to say the reception was a bit polarised.

“It’s a divisive update”, replies one critic. “The alterations are slop – unacceptable changes to artistic intent.” Yet, Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, unequivocally views this update as a significant step forward in the advancing world of technology- a “GPT moment for graphics.” He continues his statement by explaining the delicate blend of hand-crafted rendering with the power of generative AI. In Huang’s eyes, DLSS 5 delivers a notable leap in visual realism but importantly, still leaves creative control firmly in the hands of artists.

Here’s a bit of background for the uninitiated – DLSS, or Deep Learning Super Sampling, is an AI rendering technology that increases graphics performance while maintaining image quality. In essence, it allows your games to look better and run faster. The “5” stands for the version – this being Nvidia’s latest addition to its DLSS family.

So, how does DLSS5 make a difference?

Well, for games that have taken advantage of this new release, the technology has been able to provide instant enhancements to lighting and shadows. That’s something that previous iterations of Nvidia’s upscaling tools, those that relied on machine learning, found challenging to do without sacrificing other elements of the gaming experience.

Differentiating it from previous versions, DLSS 5 uses a unique blend of hand-drawn rendering—allowing artists to maintain that necessary creative control—and generative AI. This combination ensures a dramatic increase in visual realism, a factor credited as one of the main causes for the much-talked-about controversy. The technology is pushing the boundary between the creator’s intent and the end result of the AI’s render.

Regardless of the initial backlash, it is clear Nvidia has made a firm commitment to striding boldly on the path of blending creativity and AI for graphics. Whether this path is the right one to tread, is a question only time, and more importantly, the acceptance of artists and gamers alike, can answer.

A curious trend is emerging in the AI arena, where creative minds, particularly those with experience in improv acting, are finding unexpected career opportunities. The reason? Leading AI companies, seeking to train their models in human emotion and tone, have posted job listings calling for actors with unique improvisation skills, as well as the ability to stay true to a character’s voice throughout a scene.

The catch is that the stage for these performers is unlike anything they might have envisaged. Instead of strutting their stuff in a theater or a film studio, they would be plying their trade in a somewhat more unconventional set – this being the data training ground for Artificial Intelligence.

One of the companies leading the trend is Handshake AI, a firm known for providing specialized training data to big names in the AI industry, including the likes of OpenAI. This company, and others like it, is currently in a race to deliver high-quality, niche training data aimed at enhancing the capabilities of AI models. The ultimate goal? To create an artificial intelligence that can master the subtle nuances of human emotional responses and vocal intonations.

This unique intersection of AI technology and performing arts underscores the constantly evolving role of human creativity within advanced tech spaces. The ability to authentically impart emotion and tone, traditionally associated with the performing arts, is now being harnessed to teach AI models how humans communicate – not just in terms of content, but also with the myriad emotional undertones that shape every interaction.

While this seems like an unexpected pairing, it highlights the importance of understanding human communication in order to create AI which can accurately interpret, respond and interact with people. Does this mean actors could play a surprising role in molding the future of AI technology? The job listings suggest so.

So, for all the struggling actors out there, or indeed anyone with a discerning creative flair and an understanding of the human emotional spectrum, a novel career avenue might just have opened up. Who’d have thought the skills for the next big AI breakthrough might just lie in the hands of the world’s thespians?

The race for supremacy in the streaming world is always a tight one, but Netflix is pulling out all the stops. In a bold move, the streaming giant has just acquired InterPositive, an artificial intelligence (AI) company founded by none other than Hollywood star Ben Affleck. Best known for his acting and directing prowess, Affleck is also a keen technology enthusiast and the co-founder of this innovative tech firm that specializes in tools for film and TV production.

Affleck, an Oscar-winning actor and director, also known for his love of Dunkin’ Donuts, is certainly a man of many talents. It seems he’s now adding tech entrepreneur to that list, with his InterPositive venture pivoting to become part of Netflix’s broad-ranging operations.

This is a particularly strategic acquisition for Netflix. Interpositive brings a unique offering to the table – a team of skilled engineers and researchers who specialize in AI technology, a critical resource in the modern digital media landscape. The advancement of AI in the world of film and TV production could change the game completely. Imagine a world where AI can predict trends, analyze viewership data, or even assist in the creative process of filmmaking. The possibilities are vast and largely unexplored, making this a tantalizing prospect for Netflix.

So, what does this mean for Affleck and his team? According to the terms of the deal, the entire InterPositive team of 16 will switch over to Netflix. They’ll continue their important work, but now as part of a global household name. As for Affleck himself, he’ll stay on as a strategic senior advisor, providing his unique blend of Hollywood know-how and tech innovation. This synergistic partnership promises exciting opportunities for both parties, with Affleck’s expertise adding a touch of Hollywood magic to tech-heavy projects, and Netflix’s resources boosting InterPositive’s capabilities.

Affleck’s move into the tech sphere comes from a place of inspiration, which he has attributed to observing the early rise of AI technology in production. Transformative technologies often influence the most unexpected sectors and it appears filmmaking is no different. We can only speculate at this stage about how these technological innovations will shape future Netflix productions, but it is safe to say we can expect some exciting, cutting-edge developments.

With the ink barely dry on the deal, the industry waits with bated breath to see how this union between Hollywood and Silicon Valley will unfold. Will we see a different style of content? Enhanced user experience? High-tech behind-the-scenes magic? The possibilities are endless and Netflix’s rebellious, groundbreaking ethic could well be the driving force behind the next big revolution in streaming technology.

A New Dawn In Video Generation

When any thought of artificial intelligence (AI) comes to mind, our imagination might be limited to software systems and robot-like entities aiding in labor-intensive tasks. However, when Irish filmmaker Ruairi Robinson began uploading short clips of AI-created videos using ByteDance’s newest video generation model, Seedance 2.0, it was mind-blowing. What Robinson uploaded was indeed a bold leap from the conventional use of AI which primarily focused on task execution.

Robinson’s uploads were not just computer-generated images (CGIs). They were more than superficial representations of human figures or life-like animations as we’ve come to know them. The clips starred a digital duplicate of none other than world-renowned actor Tom Cruise. And this digital ‘Cruise’ was not a mere stationary figure, but it engaged in physically demanding, intricate battle sequences against other digital avatars like Brad Pitt, humanoid robots, and hordes of zombies.

The unique aspect of these clips is not just the impeccable likeness to the celebrities they were designed after. It’s the insofar unparalleled fluidity and intricate movements of these characters that set the work apart. The figures moved with a deftness and complexity almost indistinguishable from carefully choreographed scenes involving real-world stunt doubles. What further enhanced the clips’ appeal was the kinetic ’camerawork’,’ where the digitally created camera tracked, moved and filmed the sequences just as in a conventional, professionally shot movie.

Such a level of image rendering in motion puts a completely new perspective to what AI can do when it comes to video generation. The advent of this new tech innovation and the accuracy it brings with it may force media enthusiasts to rethink the definition of entertainment.

An Impact On The Entertainment Industry?

With this use of AI technology, a possible question arises: what does it imply for the conventionally-produced entertainment industry? What happens now that AI can mimic human figures in motion seamlessly, and even choreograph intricately designed fight sequences? Does this mean that we might soon find ourselves sitting in movie theatres, watching feature films with completely AI-generated characters?

While it’s too early to make such conclusions, AI enthusiasts are decidedly thrilled about the possibilities this heralds. Acknowledge it or not, the entertainment industry is on the brink of an unprecedented, tech-induced disruption. And as this latest iteration of AI technology from ByteDance’s Seedance 2.0 has demonstrated, the next wave of innovation in the entertainment industry might just be computer-generated.

Will traditional film and media industries stand the heat? Or will they simmer and adapt to tap into this promising frontier? Only time can tell. But one thing’s for sure. AI is here to stay, and its application in the entertainment realm – as displayed by Ruairi Robinson’s clips – is downright fascinating.

In the early weeks of January, Iran witnessed a historical blackout as the ruling regime shut down the internet. These moves came in the wake of protests that were spreading rapidly across the nation, taking the powers that be by surprise. The government’s hurried efforts to stem the tide of dissent were clearly visible in this drastic measure. Yet, despite the absence of digital communication avenues, the protests refused to die down. Paradoxically the blackout meant to suppress opposition, became a characterizing feature of this civil disobedience.

Nonetheless, the internet shutdown had a notable impact. It resulted in a significant slowdown in the dissemination of information, both within the country and to the outside world. The ripple effect of an information vacuum compounded the overall chaotic scenario, making it more difficult for the public – both domestic and international – to understand the ground realities of the situation.

Tucked behind the securely guarded borders, telecom signals jammed, an ongoing human rights catastrophe unfolded. The dystopian landscape saw an unprecedented wave of state-endorsed violence raining down on the protesters. Reliable estimates suggest a chilling death toll anywhere in the range of 3,000 to a staggering 30,000. Even if we consider the lowest estimate, itself a gross underestimation admitted by the Iranian state, Iran is going through one of the bloodiest rebellions it has ever witnessed.

Looking at Iran’s situation, one can’t help but ask how far governments may go to maintain control over their citizenry? Will they go as far as unplugging a nation from digital life, thereby effectively disconnecting them from one another and the rest of the world? This case raises several questions about the role of the internet in modern protests and the strategies governments might employ to quash these uprisings.

While the situation might seem bleak, history has shown us that the human spirit is indomitable. Governments can implement blackouts, impose curfews, and enforce strict laws, but can they truly silence an entire nation? Will they be able to drown out the collective voice of thousands – or millions – crying out for change? Undoubtedly, only time holds the answers to these questions. But one thing is certain: no amount of darkness can extinguish the spark of human resilience.

The US Senate, concerned by the escalating misuse of advanced technology for creating non-consensual explicit content, has taken a major leap towards mitigating the issue. They’ve passed a bill that could help those whose likeness has been manipulated into explicit images – known as deepfakes – without their consent, by providing them with a new tool to fight back.

The bill, dubbed the Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits Act (or the DEFIANCE Act), grants victims the right to sue those who created the offensive images for civil damages. This unanimous decision – with no objections or requirement for a roll-call vote – took place on the Senate floor on Tuesday.

They’ve designed the DEFIANCE Act to bolster the efforts undertaken by the Take It Down Act previously. The latter is a law that criminalizes the distribution of intimate images without consent, also known as nonconsensual intimate images (NCII). This law also mandates social media platforms to promptly remove such content when brought to their notice.

Deepfake technology utilizes artificial intelligence to alter images and videos in a way that they appear authentic. By harnessing this technology, perpetrators can create nonconsensual explicit content by imposing another person’s likeness onto pornographic material. The growing prevalence of this misuse has raised significant concerns about privacy, consent, and cyber harassment.

While some laws condemning nonconsensual intimate images exist, the DEFIANCE Act takes the cause a step further by focusing on deepfake-generated explicit content, thus acknowledging the technological aspect of the problem. The unanimous consent of the Senate on the passing of the DEFIANCE Act indicates the nationwide urgency to combat this issue.

Critics argue that laws like the DEFIANCE Act need to balance between protecting individuals’ rights and maintaining freedom of speech and creativity. Some worry that policies might be overbroad and suppress artistic expressions that involve individuals’ likenesses.

Nonetheless, advocates of the DEFIANCE Act believe the legislation would be a significant milestone in crusading privacy rights and personal dignities in the digital age. With this development, victims of nonconsensual deepfake pornography now have a potential legal path to seek justice.

This legislation marks a significant shift in the legal field’s approach to tackle emerging deepfake technology issues. As technology advances, laws also need to evolve to counter these new challenges. The DEFIANCE Act seems to be a crucial step in that direction, recognizing the harm inflicted by nonconsensual use of deepfake technology in explicit content and providing victims with a legal recourse.
