\nThe US Senate, concerned by the escalating misuse of advanced technology for creating non-consensual explicit content, has taken a major leap towards mitigating the issue. They\u2019ve passed a bill<\/strong> that could help those whose likeness has been manipulated into explicit images \u2013 known as deepfakes \u2013 without their consent, by providing them with a new tool to fight back.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe bill, dubbed the Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits Act (or the DEFIANCE Act), grants victims the right to sue those who created the offensive images for civil damages. This unanimous decision \u2013 with no objections or requirement for a roll-call vote \u2013 took place on the Senate floor on Tuesday.\n<\/p>\n

\nThey\u2019ve designed the DEFIANCE Act to bolster the efforts undertaken by the Take It Down Act<\/strong> previously. The latter is a law that criminalizes the distribution of intimate images without consent, also known as nonconsensual intimate images (NCII). By harnessing this technology, perpetrators can create nonconsensual explicit content by imposing another person\u2019s likeness onto pornographic material.
