Here’s something I didn’t exactly see coming. I had rather confidently predicted that maverick innovator Elon Musk might choose to quietly submit the required forms for an initial public offering (IPO) for his futuristic space venture, SpaceX, on the 20th of a given month, keeping it all under wraps. Well, that forecast didn’t quite pan out \u2014 he seems to have up and done it on the 1st. Now, it’s anyone’s guess whether there’s any meaning to that, but it does lend itself to some tantalizing speculation. Might we be wise to earmark June 7th on our calendars, in anticipation of a possible IPO? Food for thought.<\/p>\n
But let’s back up a second. It’s a fact now: SpaceX has officially filed for an IPO on the very first day of April. As it turns out, this simply kicks off the next step of the process. From here, the official documentation SpaceX has filed, called an S-1, will undergo an in-depth review by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). And the SEC, despite occasional jokes about its pace and diligence, holds the key to the IPO proceeding. Depending upon their findings, the earliest possible date that SpaceX could become a publicly-traded company appears to be June. <\/p>\n
That’s only if the SEC reviewers channel their inner Musk and charge ahead like a SpaceX rocket. As you might worry, there does appear to be a perception among some that the oversight body can lapse into something of an autopilot mode, approving filings with little more than a cursory glance. And by ‘cursory glance’, I mean a brief skimming of perhaps the first page of the proposal, before officials collectively yell “break!” and make a beeline for the smoking area.<\/p>\n
However, it wouldn’t do to shortchange the complexities of the process or the role the SEC plays. A typical IPO process involves several meticulously-defined stages, starting with the submission of the initial documentation to its eventual approval. It’s a delicate, thorough act that calls for extreme scrutiny and regulatory compliance, executed under the ever-watchful eye of the SEC.<\/p>\n
If speculation is to be believed and all goes according to, well, whichever plan Musk is operating under this week, SpaceX’s IPO is indeed coming in the next two months. And although we’re talking about something as esoteric and futuristic as commercial space travel, the excitement amongst investors is palpably down-to-earth. A SpaceX IPO would offer an opportunity to be part of Musk’s vision \u2014 his steadfast belief in life beyond Earth, in colonies on Mars, in a new frontier for humanity \u2014 by buying a stake in the company.<\/p>\n
Admittedly, trying to keeping up with Musk’s plans can be as dizzying as space travel for the uninitiated. But in the world of finance, as in the cosmos, preparation is key. So circle those dates and brace for the thrilling ride that’s as unpredictable and exhilarating as the man spearheading it. <\/p>\n
