In order to achieve this, the company is planning to employ invisible watermarks on Claude-generated text. This represents a significant milestone as it allows for more reliable tracking and verification of AI-generated content.

The company’s approach draws on an existing technology, an open-source watermarking technology known as the “SynthID-Text” method. The SynthID-Text approach was first developed by Google DeepMind and functions by creating identifiable patterns via probabilities in wording. This methodology in watermarking is expected to increase the traceability and accountability of Claude’s work.

In addition to this, Anthropic is integrating support for C2PA in Claude-processed images. Both these measures have been taken in response to the European Union’s AI Act. For those unfamiliar, the AI Act mandates that synthetic content – be it audio, image, video, or text – must include machine-readable marks. This resembles a “digital watermark” making it easier for regulators and other interested parties to identify and trace AI-generated content.

The capacity to detect and trace synthetic content has become increasingly important considering the wave of “deepfakes” and AI-generated content that has flooded the internet. The implementation of these watermarks could potentially offer a solution to this complex problem, offering regulators and consumers a way to differentiate between human and AI content.

It will be interesting to witness the reception and utility of these invisible watermarks on Claude-generated content. As the world grapples with the flood of AI-synthesized content, such strategies will become essential to maintain the fabric of digital communication.

For additional information on how Anthropic is unfolding the application of invisible watermarks on Claude-generated text, you may refer to the detailed coverage provided by The Verge here.

In an effort to maintain transparency and comply with European’s AI regulations, Anthropic, the powerhouse behind the AI called Claude, has announced major changes to the text generated by the robot.
