This uncanny marriage of technology and creativity has not pleased everyone though – especially the big three record labels, Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music Group.

They’ve come forward with a proposal that challenges the eligibility of AI songs for chart positions. In essence, AI-produced songs stand to be considered non-entities on international music charts. This means that no matter how popular an AI-generated song may become, it wouldn’t stand a chance at being recognized on leading music charts if the proposal is accepted.

This proposition of the record labels takes the conversation about AI’s role in music to a whole new level. It’s a leap beyond a previous labeling proposal put forward by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), SAG-AFTRA, and others. The earlier proposal called for the introduction of standardized labels for AI-generated and AI-assisted songs. This was designed to ensure the audience knew whether they were jamming out to a song created by a machine or a human.

The proposal by Universal, Sony, and Warner expands on this by insisting that songs must not just be clearly labeled, but also be “substantially human”. This implies that for a song to gain rightful international acclaim, there lies a precondition that it is primarily created by human effort.
