However, this potent imagery also highlighted the pitfalls of such manipulation – misinformation and manipulation of reality.

Google Earth bore witness to this creative and potentially subversive ability, displaying a previously unseen blend of real and unreal imagery. It allowed users to create fantastical scenes like cabins nestled in the mountains, but it also demonstrated the potential for disinformation spread through AI-assisted image manipulation. Soon enough, concerns arose about the authenticity of these AI-altered images.

Google’s response was swift. It emphasized its commitment to preventing misinformation and ensuring the credibility of the images carry their weight. The tech giant stated, “We take misinformation seriously – every image created with Nano Banana in Google Earth includes the SynthID digital watermark.” This reassurance suggested that each AI-created image in Google Earth carries a unique identification tag, helping to verify its authenticity and exposing its AI-creation, if needed.

This watermark marked Google’s attempt to maintain a balance between creativity and credibility. Through this, users seeking verification of an image’s authenticity could either ask the Gemini app or use Google’s Lens in Search to check if the image is AI-generated. This offered a sense of security amidst the burgeoning rapid-fire spread of AI-generated false imagery.

The manipulation of reality by AI is an altogether staggering and uncanny phenomenon.
