Larian CEO: No Team Cuts for AI Replacements

In recent news, the CEO of Baldur’s Gate 3 studio Larian found himself at the center of a heated debate after commenting on the use of AI in their forthcoming game. Based on statements made during an interview with Swen Vincke, the CEO of Larian, it was reported by Bloomberg that the game developers will be making use of AI tools to assist in creating concept art and drafting placeholder text for their next highly anticipated game, Divinity.

This revelation, as expected, stirred up the gaming community. With many fans expressing their concerns about the increasing encroachment of AI in game development. In particular, the idea that the potent creative jobs could potentially be replaced or undermined by AI algorithms was a point of significant contention among critics.

However, in the face of this initial backlash, Vincke came out to clarify the studio’s position. During an interview with IGN, the Larian CEO was quick to reassure the community that the studio isn’t planning on replacing its development staff with AI components nor does it intend to release a game that heavily incorporates AI elements.

Instead, he emphasized that the use of AI is limited to facilitating the concept art creation and placeholder text writing. The human touch, according to Vincke, is irreplaceable when it comes to building a truly immersive gaming experience. In his own subsequent statement, he stressed the ongoing dedication of the studio to innovation without compromising on the creativity and artistic integrity that is characteristic of their games.

Last week, excitement for the studio’s upcoming game was ramped up when Larian announced Divinity at The Game Awards. The teaser trailer, which is being described as “cinematic,” only heightened the anticipation amongst the gaming community, even though it did not reveal much about the game.

Overall, the controversy illustrates the passionate debates brewing in the gaming industry as AI technology becomes ever more sophisticated and integrated into the game development process. What is evident, though, is Larian’s commitment to balancing the utilization of advanced technology with cultivating a rich humanistic gaming experience.
