Created an app to revive my dying yard.

Exploring the World of App Building with Gemini

The sensation was equal parts exhilaration and bewilderment, as I stared at my computer screen, absorbing the sight of my fully functional app. Just a few minutes prior, Gemini, my latest venture into artificial intelligence, had been presented with a lengthy prompt that somehow resulted in a running application on preview. Yet, the achievement was not without its glitches. A prompt message surfaced, indicating something about the system being “unrecoverably broken.”

Alarmingly phrased? Yes. A deal breaker? Oddly enough, not quite. Because right there, nestled below the daunting message was a potential solution – a button offering to remedy the issue at hand. It was peculiar to say the least. Here I was, having just used a computer to build a whole app with a series of pre-composed prompts, yet it was reliant on me banging out a mouse click to resolve an internal error.

It got stranger when nearly four minutes later, Gemini triumphantly announced its success in dealing with the issue. The language used was largely incomprehensible to my layman’s ears – phrases like “blockages” and “race conditions” were used to describe the process. And yet, it didn’t really matter that I didn’t understand the intricacies. The sheer thrill of witnessing artificial intelligence in action had me thoroughly captivated. It was akin to watching a master blacksmith at work, understanding little of the process but appreciating the end result nonetheless.

At this point, I was hardly new to the game. This was my second or third foray into the world of artificial – or vibecoding – backyard app creation. The backyard, in this case, being a symbolic representation of a virtual platform where even those without extensive app-building expertise can engage in the creation process.

Sure, it had its quirks, but artificial intelligence, in all its glory, thrived on pattern recognition and adaptability. It demonstrated an uncanny ability to learn, adjust and resolve blockages. The proof was right there on my screen, materialized in the form of a functioning app.

AI, with all its technical complexities and jargon-filled explanations, may seem intimidating. However, quirky platforms like Gemini do an excellent job of demystifying the user side of AI, bringing a sense of thrilling adventure to our backyards.

This is far from the end. It’s a curiosity-inducing journey into what the fusion of technology and enthusiasm can produce. For the likes of Gemini, and in turn us, there’s always a challenge around the corner, always a bug to fix, and always a new venture awaiting exploration.
