In an unusual turn of events, Sega has decided to pull its Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition from digital storefronts. This decision comes in response to a catastrophic launch that left users complaining bitterly about various issues. Problems reportedly ranged from a myriad of bugs and glitches to a controversial upscaling process, speculated to be the work of artificial intelligence.
Le Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition, which launched on Tuesday, is a remastered edition of the acclaimed 2011 strategy game. As a ‘Complete Edition’, it featured the main game along with all its expansive DLC content. Sega promised numerous significant upgrades in the version, including enhanced visuals, 1440p and 4K UI scaling, and updated controls, meant to give the game a fresh and modern spin.
Unfortunately, the remaster did not live up to gamers’ expectations. Users quickly took to various online platforms, including the popular gaming forum Steam, to voice their disappointment with the game’s performance. In fact, on Steam, the game’s rating plummeted to an “Overwhelmingly Negative” status before it was consequently removed from the platform. On social media sites such as Reddit, numerous threads showcased the reportedly defaced artwork, with users blaming AI for the alleged pitfall.
As a result, Sega was quick to recognise the problem at hand. “We’re aware that Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition has not met our players’ expectations,” acknowledged the gaming heavyweight, promising to look into the situation and handle the customer grievances.
The incident serves as a reminder of the significant challenges and potential pitfalls companies face in remastering older games. As modern consumers expect higher performance and quality from remastered versions, companies must be careful to address these expectations properly to avoid a scenario similar to what happened with Total War: Shogun 2.
